The work of the Dream Project would not be possible without the commitment and generosity of the following funding partners. We aim to foster meaningful partnerships with colleges and universities, Virginia public school districts, other nonprofit organizations and service providers that can provide supplemental services to Dream Project constituents.
Our partners offer our community access to valuable resources such as legal assistance, physical and mental health services, career development counseling and educational support. These services supplement the Dream Project programs and scholarship to increase our students’ likelihood of success.
Partnership Highlights
We are proud to partner with Beyond 12, a nationwide nonprofit organization dedicated to helping low-income and underrepresented students succeed in college. Beyond 12 utilizes a unique coaching model to ensure students stay on track to graduate and thrive in the college environment. The Dream Project provides access to a Beyond 12 coach to Dream Scholarship recipients that are entering their first year in college and select upperclassmen.
The Beyond12 coach and student connect at least twice a month, and during each session, the coach checks-in with scholars and helps in various target areas that include:
Achieving Academic & Personal Goals
Balancing School/ Work/ Extracurricular Activities
Utilizing Campus Resources
Understanding/Accessing Financial Resources
Networking & Building Social Capital
Planning for College Graduation
Between sessions, coaches connect with scholars via phone, text, video chat, and social media to flag any potential challenges that scholars may be facing.
To assess the effectiveness of the Beyond 12 program on Dream Project Scholars, we developed an evaluation process that included a survey of participants and focus groups. The results overwhelmingly affirmed that Dream Scholars benefit from the Beyond 12 coach relationship. You can learn more about the process and the results here.
The Dream Project hosts a summer intern through the William & Mary Leadership and Community Engagement Internship Program. The W&M Intern helps build up relationships with the Dream Scholars, and with social media content. Since Dream Project staff is small, the W&M intern quickly becomes an important member of the team.
In addition, Dream Project Mentoring Program students participate in a seminar discussion with W&M students enrolled in the DC Urban Education course in Washington D.C twice a year. Both sets of students enjoy the opportunity to learn from each others’ unique experiences.
Lastly, 10 Dream Project mentees attend the Leadership by Design Program held every on the William and Mary campus every summer. The Leadership by Design program helps Dream Project mentees build confidence and find their voice. Dream Project utilizes this opportunity to identify and recruit potential candidates for its mentoring program among rising 11th and 12th graders.
